Bedlington travel corridor

Bedlington travel corridor

Enhanced walking routes, rail links, and community engagement ensure better connectivity.

Funded by the UK Government, the West to East Bedlington project aims to create a safer, greener active travel corridor.

Background

NCC successfully bid for £9 million in funding via the central government ‘Levelling Up Fund’ to implement measures forming a walking and cycling link throughout Bedlington.

The scheme also includes a £1 million local contribution. Levelling Up funding has been made available to support local authorities in driving productivity through public and sustainable transport infrastructure investments.

The Bedlington Active Travel Corridor will connect the west of Bedlington to the east of the town.

As part of the scheme, segregated walking and cycling facilities will be provided to better connect residents to employment, education and leisure facilities within Bedlington and improved connections to the wider Northumberland North East area. The corridor will provide a direct link to Bedlington Railway station, set to reopen as part of the Northumberland Line in 2025, providing rail travel between Ashington and Newcastle.

Scheme Aims

  • improve the provision for Active Travel in Bedlington, providing high-quality walking, cycling and wheeling facilities
  • encourage a modal shift away from private car use in an area of high reliance on private motor vehicles
  • create improvements in air quality and road safety for cyclists and pedestrians as secondary effects of the reduction in overall reliability on cars
  • tackle social inequality, enable development opportunities, facilitate modal shift and improve road safety
  • link to future opportunities for funding

Users will also benefit from new and improved surface treatment on footways and carriageways, in addition to street furniture, public realm works, lighting, traffic signing, and road markings.
