The investment in Hexham will connect the village of Corbridge with Hexham town centre. Improvements to the pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in Hexham town centre will also be delivered as part of the proposals. The route will improve walking and cycling infrastructure by delivering a segregated corridor connecting residents to employment, education, and leisure facilities, whilst providing a link to Hexham Railway and bus station.

Feedback from the Hexham to Corbridge consultation

In Spring 2023 we undertook public consultation, both in person and online via the online consultation tool, citizen space.  The project team were on hand to discuss the scheme and answer any questions.  Feedback from the consultation has been summarised below, with an update from the design team.

  • Increase the level of segregation along the route so that walkers don’t have to be too mindful of passing cyclists.

Update: Increased from 20% to 50% across the route. Warning signs along the route to be included for cyclists to slow down across shared space sections.

  • Increase the level of protection for cyclists when crossing Devils Water Bridge and Corbridge Bridge.

Update: Modelling exercise undertaken, additional provision included as part of signal control.

  • Provide a more direct route around Hexham Bus Station.

Update: a new route through the car park takes out complicated crossing arrangements offering a much more direct means of navigating this section.
