Permits for Household Waste Recovery Centres (tip)
Permits for Household Waste Recovery Centres (tip)
For most people, you do not need to book an HWRC permit. If you do need a permit, there is no charge.
Permits are non-transferrable between households or dates.
If you can't use your permits, we can't reapply your limit.
Unplanned HWRC closures
In the event of the HWRC sites being closed due to adverse weather, permits are valid for 5 days.
Alternatively if your HWRC is closed and there is another HWRC open on the day your permit is valid, you can attend that site instead.
When a permit is required
You'll need a permit:
- if you bring any waste in a large vehicle
- if you bring DIY waste in any vehicle
You will need 2 permits if you are carrying DIY waste in a large vehicle.

We allocate permits to make sure centres never get too busy.
Check if your vehicle needs a permit
If you are bringing DIY waste, or you have a commercial vehicle, van or large trailer attached to your car, it will need a permit. Domestic cars include:
- a people carrier
- a twin cab pick-up
- an SUV (not a 4X4)
- a campervan with windows and seats in the rear
- an adapted disability vehicle (with a blue badge)
- a trailer or horsebox 5ft (1.52m) or shorter
Book a permit
You'll need to tell us:
- your name
- an email address to send the permit to (if you don't have an email, telephone Customer Services on 0345 600 6400.)
- your home address
- the address from which the household waste is coming from
- information about your vehicle size and weight
- your vehicle registration number, make and model
- the site, day, and time you want to visit
- what waste you are bringing to the site
If you book a standard permit and you are bringing DIY waste, you will need to book again to get your DIY permit. Permits must be booked at least 24 hours before you arrive.

DIY permit limits
Four DIY Waste permits can be applied for per household in any four-week period. A DIY permit is for up to 100 litres of DIY waste. This is roughly:
- 2 50 litre builders' rubble sacks
- 2 builders' tubs
- 6 builders' buckets
- one item no larger than 2000mm x 750mm x 700mm
Any waste over this amount will be charged.
Standard permit limits
- you are allowed 12 permits in a year
- only one permit can be applied for at a time
- up to 3 permits can be booked in any 7 day period
- you cannot carry over any unused permits to the next year
We do not exchange unused permits. If you do not use your permit, it will still be taken off your annual allowance of 12 permits.
Commercial and trade waste
Commercial or trade waste cannot be taken to a HWRC. Our centres are only for domestic waste.
