About the service
Cost
This is a chargeable service. This will get you up to 20 collections.
The price is fixed and will remain the same regardless of when you sign up. The 2025 cost is £54.50 (subject to full council approval).
If you're a new customer, the charge will include the cost of your garden waste bin.

When collections happen
Collections normally take place between March and November.
You will need to renew and pay for garden waste collections each year.

What to put in my garden waste bin
Yes please:
- grass cuttings
- shrubs
- leaves
- weeds
- flowers and plants
- hedge clippings
- prunings
- small branches
No thank you:
- plastic bags or bin bags
- plant pots or plastic trays
- kitchen waste or food waste
- soil, bricks or rubble
- nappies
- paper, plastic or cardboard
- textiles
- animal waste
- biodegradable or compostable bags
- children's toys
- garden ornaments
- ragwort
How to ensure collection runs smoothly
On the day of collection:
- present your bin by 7am
- place your bin at the side of the kerb, outside your property
- take your bin back in when it has been emptied
Putting the wrong materials in your garden bin will mean we may not empty it, and no refund or partial refund will be made.
Missed collections
Before reporting a missed collection:
- make sure your garden waste bin was out by 7am on your collection day
- make sure you did not have any wrong materials in your bin
- check our alerts page in case there was an issue with collection in your area

When isn't garden waste collected?
There are no collections from December to February because of the limited amount of garden waste produced.
Moving house
Moving within Northumberland
We may be able to arrange for your garden waste collections to be moved to your new house. Speak to your local customer information centre to arrange this. We are not able to arrange for both properties to receive garden waste collection unless additional payment is made.
Leaving Northumberland
You can't take your council-owned garden waste bin with you. You can either:
- agree with the new owners to share the cost for remaining collections
- leave it for the new owners to use at your expense
- contact us to cancel the service, our usual cancellation policy applies

Telephone: 0345 600 6400 to request a new bin.
