Stillbirths

Stillbirths

Registering allows the baby to be officially acknowledged and lets parents give them a name.

Register a stillbirth within 42 days

A doctor or midwife who was present at the birth, or examined the baby, will issue a medical certificate of stillbirth. Hospital staff usually contact a registrar to attend the ward and register the stillbirth.

Who can register the stillbirth?

The baby’s parents, hospital staff, or witnesses may register the stillbirth depending on marital status and roles. Detailed guidance is available on GOV.UK.

Requesting a baby loss certificate

If your pregnancy ends before 24 weeks, you can get a certificate in memory of your baby. It's free to get a certificate.

To apply for this, you will need:

  • your NHS number or postcode registered to your GP
  • the mobile phone number or email address registered to your GP
  • permission from the other parent and their email address if you want their name on the certificate
