Report obstructions on roads or pavements
Find information on what is classed as an obstruction and how to report it.
Obstruction blocking a route
You should let us know if a pavement or road is blocked.
Routes can be obstructed by:
- a skip or advertising board
- overhanging tree branches
- mud or debris on the road
- poorly placed temporary roadworks
- poorly fenced off road works
We'll work with the people responsible to remove an obstacle.
If people are in danger or the law is broken, we will take action.
Northumberland County Council does not have the power to enforce the law on an illegally parked vehicle causing an obstruction unless there are clear signs prohibiting parking. In such an instance, you should contact the police.

Enforcement
Northumberland County Council has powers under Section 154 (1) of the Highways Act 1980, to advise the owner/occupier of adjoining land they are required to cut back vegetation so as to remove the cause or likelihood of danger, obstruction or interference to the users of the Highway (footpath).
In most cases the vegetation is cut back very quickly by the owner/ occupier. Sometimes, this can be a longer process but be assured we will follow due process to ensure the work is carried out.
