The Big Northumberland Gear Change

The Big Northumberland Gear Change

Encouraging walking, cycling, or public transport for short trips.

The Big Northumberland Gear Change is a local campaign. It encourages residents to slow down, take stock, and consider small daily changes for sustainable travel. We want to create a culture where walking, cycling or using public transport is the first choice for short journeys.

On our special website, you'll find awesome tips and stories from people who are already biking and walking more. It's not about being a super-fast cyclist or walking miles and miles. It's about choosing to leave the car at home sometimes. Enjoy a ride or walk, especially for short trips.

The campaign goals can be found below:

  • help the environment, reduces pollution and supports Northumberland’s goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030
  • improve health, encourages physical activity through walking and cycling, boosting overall health and wellbeing
  • inspire, advice and inspiring stories from residents who have shifted to biking and walking
  • suitable for all ages and abilities, the campaign includes a range of challenges and activities that everyone can participate in
  • promotes local exploration, offers a great opportunity to explore the beauty of Northumberland on foot or by bike, discovering hidden gems of the county
  • convenient for short trips, especially useful for trips under 5km, where walking or cycling can be a practical and enjoyable option
  • supports sustainable living, contributes to a greener lifestyle, reducing reliance on cars and fostering a more sustainable community
