A193 Seafront Active Travel Scheme

A193 Seafront Active Travel Scheme

Scheme to improve current and new infrastructure established between Kingsway and Old Hartley.

Overview

The City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) fund was allocated to the North East Combined Authority (NECA) for investment in local transport networks across the region. CRSTS presents £3.66m revenue funding for design and development, with £147m capital available from Summer 2024.

The A193 Seafront Active Travel scheme will see improvements to existing infrastructure and new infrastructure established between Kingsway to Old Hartley.  The scheme will connect with current improvement works on Bondicar Terrace to the north (and onwards to Blyth Town Centre) and connect to improvement works in North Tyneside (Sustainable Seafront Scheme) to the south.

These works are of regional significance as they will advance active travel improvement works further north as an extension from the network improvements made to date in Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside.

Vision

The project will seek to:

  • Deliver high quality active travel infrastructure
  • Enhance existing active travel opportunities for residents, workers and visitors
  • Provide new surface treatments throughout the entirety of the route
  • Provide associated infrastructure including road signage/markings, crossing points, cycle storage facilities and seating.
  • Provide further connectivity within the region and beyond
  • Increase uptake of walking and wheeling along an already established coastal route

Consultation

Plans to show the proposed works, how the improvements connect with existing infrastructure and how they fit alongside other improvements in Blyth will be available to view online or in person.

We are hosting two local drop-in events on 10 and 14 June 2025.  Alongside these events, an online consultation will go live on Monday 9 June running until Monday 30  June 2025.  Dates and times of the drop in events are:
