NHS advice

Last updated: 9 September 2024.

Do

  • if eligible, get vaccinated against COVID-19
  • wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day, especially after you cough, sneeze or blow your nose, and before you eat or handle food
  • cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze and encourage children to do this. If you do not have a disposable tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow
  • regularly clean surfaces you touch often (such as door handles and remote controls) and in shared spaces, such as kitchens or bathrooms
  • if you are eligible for COVID-19 treatments (usually because you have a weakened immune system), make sure you have COVID-19 tests available and test yourself for COVID-19 if you have symptoms

Don’t

  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

Eligibility for the COVID-19 Vaccine

The winter vaccine programme will continue to focus on those at greatest risk of getting seriously ill.

Those eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine include:

  • adults aged 65 years and over
  • residents in a care home for older adults
  • individuals aged 6 months to 64 years in a clinical risk group such as diabetes, heart disease, some neurological diseases, liver disease or a weakened immune system (for instance, due to being prescribed steroids or treated for cancer). Pregnant women are also part of the clinical risk group
  • frontline NHS and social care workers

Vaccination advice from the NHS

COVID-19 appointments will be available to book through the NHS App and website, or by calling 119 for free, from 23 September 2024. Pregnant women will receive their vaccinations from maternity services or their GP.
