Director of Public Health Annual Reports

Each year, Directors of Public Health must produce an independent report on population health and recommend actions to improve health and reduce inequalities.

The 2024 Director of Public Health Report is focused on being more physically active. It explains the physical and mental benefits of moving more, and the positive difference that even small increases in activity can make.

Public Health Strategic Plan

Inequalities Plan 2022 to 2025

This aims to identify and close the inequalities gap within Northumberland. It is a system-wide 3-year plan that has a clear focus on culture and leadership change.

Northumberland County Council, NHS, voluntary and private sector and businesses will work together to tackle inequalities.

The plan covers:

  • objectives
  • what will we do?
  • how will we know we are making a difference?
  • governance
  • action plan

Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2018 to 2028

This aspirational plan sets out how we will work together to maximise the wellbeing and health of Northumberland residents and reduce inequalities over the next ten years.

Produced jointly by Northumberland County Council and NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (now the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board) - which ultimately sits with the council's Health and Wellbeing Board as one of our key responsibilities.

Integrated Wellbeing Service Highlights Report

This showcases examples of work from 2022/23, featuring case studies and real-life stories that demonstrate the service's impact on residents' lives.

Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA)

Describes the population's health needs, current pharmaceutical services, and any gaps.

The PNA identifies health needs that community pharmacies could meet and matches them against current services to find gaps. NHS England uses the PNA to decide on applications for additional NHS pharmacy contracts.

Details the vital role of public and community transport systems in keeping Northumberland residents healthy.

The report highlights how transport systems help people access healthcare, education, employment, and stay socially connected.

Northumberland Sexual Health Strategy 2024 to 2029

Details the responsibility that we have, to delivering: 

  • open access sexual health services
  • providing contraceptives
  • STI testing and treatment
  • sexual health advice

The strategy, developed in partnership with local organisations, stakeholders, services and residents, sets out our vision and priorities over the next five years.
