Free NHS health check to help reduce health risks.
Getting my health check
If you're aged 40 to 74 and do not have a pre-existing health condition, you should be invited to an NHS Health Check by your GP every 5 years.
If you think you're eligible but have not been invited, contact your GP surgery.
Our Health Trainer service also offers targeted NHS Health Checks in some locations such as workplaces and community settings.
The purpose of these health checks is to prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Find out more on the NHS Health Check website.
What to expect at your appointment
- the check takes around 20 to 30 minutes
- you'll be asked about your family history, smoking and alcohol use
- your height, weight, sex, ethnicity, and age will be recorded
- your blood pressure will be taken
- a simple blood test will check your cholesterol level, and you may also have a blood test for diabetes
- your body mass index (BMI) will be calculated. BMI is a measure of whether you're a healthy weight for your height
Advice that will be given
After the check, you'll receive free personalised advice about what you can do to stay healthy. If the health check highlights any potential problems, you'll be offered advice and support to help you address them.
