Using vapes to quit smoking

If you want to stop smoking and are considering using a vape, speak with one of our stop smoking advisors who will advise and tailor a support package.

Vapes are battery powered devices that deliver nicotine through inhaled vapour. They don’t contain tobacco so you aren’t exposed to tar or carbon monoxide which are the main toxins found in cigarettes.

Current evidence shows that vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking tobacco (Office for Health Improvement & Disparities, 2022).

They can be used on their own or alongside Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and support from a trained stop smoking advisor.

Vapes are monitored for health and safety standards, buy vape products from reputable suppliers to ensure they are legal and safe.

Managing triggers

  • behavioural change or stop smoking medication can stop cravings

  • ask people not to smoke around you when socialising
  • concentrate on a different activitiy at a time when you would normally smoke e.g. exercise
  • NRT can reduce the craving for nicotine

Our tobacco control measures

As well as helping smokers who want to quit, we aim to tackle the death, disability and disease caused by smoking.

This means:

  • preventing the uptake of smoking
  • helping those who want to quit
  • protecting people from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke

Public Health works with many departments and agencies to plan and deliver a broad range of activities. More information and support can be found on the Stop smoking support website.

The council also supports the work of Fresh, a programme set up in the North East to tackle the worst rates of smoking-related illness and death in England.
