Property Valuation Bands
The level of Council Tax for your property is based upon a valuation set by the Valuation Office Agency, which is part of the HM Revenue and Customs.
The banding is based on the value of your home on 1 April 1991 (not its current value). Properties not built on 1 April 1991 are valued on what they would have been worth at 1 April 1991.
The property is then placed into one of 8 bands (A to H). Check your valuation band on GOV.UK.
The Council sets the Council Tax charge for band D property. The charge for other bands is calculated on fixed proportions using band D as the base. The proportion you'll pay is shown in the following table:
Property Valuation Band | Property value on 1 April 1991 | Proportion |
A | Up to £40,000 | 6/9 |
B | £40,001 to £52,000 | 7/9 |
C | £52,001 to £68,000 | 8/9 |
D | £68,001 to £88,000 | 9/9 |
E | £88,001 to £120,000 | 11/9 |
F | £120,001 to £160,000 | 13/9 |
G | £160,001 to £320,000 | 15/9 |
H | Over £320,000 | 18/9 |
Appealing against your property's valuation band
The Valuation Tribunal Service handles the following Council Tax appeals:
- you should not be liable for Council Tax
- a property for which you are liable should not be chargeable
- you may be entitled to a discount or exemption, but we have not awarded it
- a civil penalty has been incorrectly charged
- you think your award of Council Tax support is incorrect
You must first tell the Council about these matters. If an agreement is not reached, an appeal to the Valuation Tribunal Service can be made.
