Fuel duty cuts

There'll be no tax rises on petrol and diesel until at least March 2026.

Rail journey discounts

Save one third on rail journeys with a Railcard.

If you are on Universal Credit, you may be entitled to a Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card.

Older person's bus pass

You can get a pass for free bus travel once you reach state pension age.

Disabled person's bus pass

If you're disabled, you may be eligible for a disabled person's bus pass. If you're unable to travel alone, a companion pass is also available.

Changes to fares on Arriva bus and Go North East.

If you’re 21 or under you can now go by bus for just £1 or less. Or, you can buy a £3 unlimited day ticket to get round County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne & Wear. You can go by Metro or ferry too. The scheme is funded until March 2025.

Adults can now travel all day, anywhere, with new more affordable day tickets. Many tickets offer a major cost-saving when compared to the existing product, such as the brand new region-wide ticket saving 46% each day (£5.90 cost saving).

Kids Go Free will cover the area of the North East Combined Authority, County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, and Sunderland during school holidays. 

School holiday dates for 2025

  • until 5 January 2024
  • 22 February to 2 March 2025
  • 12 April to 27 April 2025
  • 24 May to 1 June 2025

Metro and Shields Ferry allow up to three children aged 11 and under to travel for free (with a paying adult) all year round.
