Exhumations
Exhumations
It is unlawful to disturb any human remains, including cremated remains, without permission.
Exhumation guide
Exhumation is rare but must be done with dignity, respect, and the required legal licences and documents.
Legal exhumations fall into three categories:
- under a Ministry of Justice licence. Environmental health practitioners (EHPs) are required for this type of exhumation
- ecclesiastical/religious faculty (where remains are exhumed from holy ground)
- a coroner's order
