Citizenship ceremonies
A chance to welcome new national and local British citizens into our community. They take place at County Hall, Morpeth, generally every other month.
Who should attend
You'll need to attend if you are:
- aged 18 or over
- have successfully applied to become a British citizen
You need to attend a ceremony within 3 months of receiving your Home Office invitation.
Under 18's
Whilst we encourage those under 18 to attend, their parents can attend on their behalf and collect their certificates for them.
Cost
You will need to apply for Citizenship. You can find out how to do this on GOV.UK. The ceremony is included in your application fee.
Private ceremonies
If you'd like a more private ceremony or are unable to attend the ceremony dates offered, you can pay for this.

What to bring?
For your ceremony to take place, you will need to bring:
- your Home Office invitation
- photo identification (for example passport, driving licence)

On arrival
Come to the main reception where your documents will be checked. The receptionist will then tell you where to go.
During the ceremony
Ceremonies last around 30 minutes.
Refreshments will then be provided.
You'll make an oath of allegiance or an affirmation (if you prefer not to swear by God) and a pledge. This shows you respect the rights, freedoms, and laws of the UK. A local dignitary will be present at the ceremony to represent Northumberland.
You'll get your British Citizenship certificate and a welcome pack. You will be able to take photos with them.
How to book a ceremony
You'll receive an email from the Home Office telling you your British Nationality has been granted.
If your email invitation has run out, contact the Home Office.
